Before looking at individual houses, look at the island.

A neighborhood can seem close to your installation on a map while the actual commute feels very different during the hours you’ll be traveling.

Schofield Barracks or Wheeler Army Airfield may naturally investigate Central Oahu.

Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam buyers may compare Central, Leeward and other areas depending on their priorities.

Marine Corps Base Hawaii families may place greater emphasis on Windward communities.

I don’t start by naming a neighborhood.

I start with questions.

Where are you stationed?

What does your work schedule look like?

What’s your comfortable housing payment?

Do you want a house, townhome or condo?

How important is the commute?

Are you buying before arriving or after you’ve experienced the island?

And what does your family want life in Hawaii to look like when you’re not working?

I went through this decision myself when I PCS’d to Oahu and ultimately chose Mililani.

That doesn’t mean Mililani is automatically the answer for another military family.

The right location is the one where your commute, budget, property options and lifestyle work together.
