Cost of Living in Hawaii for Military Families
A PCS to Hawaii can come with a very different household budget than your last duty station.
Most military families expect housing to be expensive before they arrive. What can be harder to anticipate is how the rest of everyday life fits together.
Groceries, utilities, transportation, commuting, childcare, household expenses and the cost of maintaining a home can all affect how comfortable your Hawaii assignment feels financially.
At the same time, active-duty families may receive Hawaii BAH and other military compensation that changes their income picture when they relocate.
That’s why I wouldn’t evaluate the cost of living in Hawaii by looking at one national cost-of-living number.
For a military family, the better question is:
What will our actual monthly budget look like once we’re living here?
